Character origins
The creation of Miles Morales falls within the final phase of the Ultimate Universe, launched by Marvel in 2000 to offer a modern entry point for new readers. After the heavily publicized death of the Ultimate Peter Parker in June 2011, Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli designed a successor of Afro-Puerto Rican heritage, raised in Brooklyn. The decision had been set in motion internally as early as 2010, driven by an editorial push to broaden representation within the Spider-Man franchise.
In-universe, Miles is bitten by a genetically modified spider belonging to his uncle Aaron Davis, alias the Prowler — a variant of the Oscorp protocol that created Peter Parker. The young teenager develops powers similar to his predecessor's, rounded out by two exclusive abilities: an active camouflage that lets him turn invisible, and a paralyzing bioelectric shock known as the venom blast. For the first several months, he refuses to take up the suit out of respect for Peter's memory, until Captain America himself signs off on passing the torch.
Powers and abilities
- Superhuman strength and agility: a level comparable to Peter Parker's, enough to lift several tons
- Spider-sense: perception of imminent danger, equivalent to the classic spider-sense
- Wall-crawling: scaling walls and ceilings through his palms and the soles of his feet
- Active camouflage: partial or full invisibility through bioelectromagnetic mimicry
- Paralyzing venom blast: a bioelectric discharge delivered on contact, capable of knocking out an opponent
Costume and visual identity
Miles's signature costume deliberately contrasts with Peter Parker's. Sara Pichelli went with a black-dominant look featuring red accents on the eyes, hands, feet and the central spider symbol. This visual identity echoes the silhouette of the black suit Peter wore in the Ultimate Universe, but flips the codes: where Peter had red as the dominant color, Miles has black. Variants exist — the classic Brooklyn version, the Champions suit, the programmable armor — but the black-and-red identity remains the reference carried over into Sony's animated films.
Miles Morales series timeline
In fourteen years, Miles has headlined four successive solo series alongside numerous miniseries and crossover events. Here is the main editorial journey, in chronological order.
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man (vol. 2)
The character's first ongoing series, written entirely by Bendis and drawn mainly by Sara Pichelli, David Marquez and Chris Samnee. It establishes the full supporting cast (Ganke, Aaron Davis, Jefferson Morales), the antagonists specific to Miles and the dynamic with May Parker. The series wraps up just before Secret Wars 2015, which seals the end of the Ultimate Universe.
Spider-Man (vol. 2)
Miles's first solo series in Marvel's main continuity, following his transfer via Secret Wars. Bendis stays on writing duties and Sara Pichelli draws the major arcs. The series brings Miles into the Champions and the Avengers, has him cross paths with Peter Parker, and firmly plants the character in Brooklyn.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man (vol. 1)
Saladin Ahmed takes over as writer, paired with Javier Garrón on art. The run puts the spotlight back on Brooklyn, introduces Miles's cousin, Billie Morales, and develops the antagonist Ultimatum. The series passes through the War of the Realms, Outlawed and Beyond events.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man (vol. 2)
Cody Ziglar picks up the writing with Federico Vicentini on art. The run introduces the Rabble, an alternate antagonist for Miles, and explores the young Spider-Man's role within the expanded Spider-Family after Spider-Geddon and End of the Spider-Verse.
Miniseries and events
Miles appears in every Spider-Verse event (2014, 2018, 2022), in Champions (2016-2019), in Spider-Men I and II with Peter Parker, and in several miniseries written by Brian Michael Bendis or Saladin Ahmed. For the issue-by-issue breakdown, see our Miles Morales key issues guide.

Spider-Men II #1
The direct sequel to Spider-Men (2012), reuniting Miles and the 616 Peter Parker. The miniseries explores the existence of a 616 Miles Morales and laid the groundwork for several later storylines. An issue often paired with the 2012 #1.
Major arcs and landmark runs
Several arcs shape the Miles Morales mythology. The first, Who Is Miles Morales? (Ultimate Comics Spider-Man vol. 2 #1-5, 2011-2012) by Bendis and Pichelli, lays the foundation: origin story, mourning Peter, validation by Captain America. It's the canonical entry point for discovering the character. Next comes Cataclysm (2013-2014), where Miles confronts the fallout of the 616 Galactus arriving in the Ultimate Universe, followed by the final Ultimate arc before Secret Wars.
Spider-Men (2012) and Spider-Men II (2017), both written by Bendis, serve as the bridges between the two Peters and Miles. They strongly helped cement the character before his permanent move into 616. For event fans, Spider-Verse (2014) made Miles one of the pillars of the multiversal Spider-Family alongside Spider-Gwen, and directly inspired the plot of Into the Spider-Verse.
On the landmark-run side, two stand out. The Bendis-Pichelli run (2011-2018) covers almost seven years of continuity and remains the reference reading: Ultimate Comics Spider-Man vol. 2, Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man vol. 2. The Saladin Ahmed run (2018-2022) offers a read more rooted in Brooklyn, more political, and introduces cousin Billie Morales. Adaptations and cultural impact
The event that propelled Miles to worldwide fame is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the Sony Pictures animated film released in December 2018, winner of the 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, was released in June 2023 and held the top of the global box office for several weeks. The third installment, Beyond the Spider-Verse, is slated for 2027. On the video-game front, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (Sony Insomniac, November 2020) and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (October 2023) have sold tens of millions of copies combined. Every major release has triggered a measurable bump on Ultimate Fallout #4 and the early-issue variants.
